Method

The body knows
before words do.

Movement direction that takes the body as its first language: a process shaped around each person in front of the camera or on stage.Trust, listening, transformation.

Movement director, choreographer and performer, Gladia Marchetti builds her work on one conviction: the body is more honest than words. A person’s inner world is written in the way they move, stand and inhabit space.

Her approach always starts by building trust with the performer: it’s that safe space that makes everything else possible. It’s the same pact with the director: she listens until she knows exactly where they want to take the project, then turns all of that into movement. Every project is tailor-made, designed with the performer as much as with the director and the production: first the conversation, then the rehearsal room, and the set last of all.

In her work, movement is never just expression or form, but a means of revelation and metamorphosis, tied directly to the mind and the emotions. Her job is to draw the performer out. She goes as far as the project asks, shifting the weight, the rhythm, the posture of a body until that body says something it wasn’t saying before, on set, on stage, on a runway, in front of a lens.

She draws on her experience as a dancer, choreographer and actress to guide whoever she’s directing deeper into the role, with their whole body, on screen and in the theatre alike.

In her words

Trust is where my work always starts. I create a space safe enough for the person in front of me to let go and step out of their comfort zone without fear of getting it wrong.

From there everything else opens up: the body warms up, the breathing eases, and little by little real transformation happens, not the performed kind.

Dance, choreography, acting: those are my roots, and I bring all three into every body I work with, on and off set. I want to keep searching for that transformation in whoever’s in front of me.
